Essential Travel Tips for Cape Verde (2026 Guide)

Planning a trip to Sal Island requires a bit of preparation. Since almost everything on the island is imported, being well-prepared is the key to a stress-free holiday. Here are our expert recommendations to ensure you enjoy every moment of your stay.

1. Documentation & Entry Fees

  • Airport Security Tax (TSA): This is mandatory for most international travelers. You should pay it online via the official portal www.ease.gov.cv at least 5 days before your trip (cost approx. €31). Keep the digital receipt with the QR code on your phone.
  • Visas: Many nationalities are visa-exempt for short stays, but the TSA remains mandatory. See more here.
  • Travel Insurance: Always check your policy’s fine print. In case of emergency, Sal Experiences can help you contact a doctor or coordinate transport to the nearest clinic.

2. Money & Payments

  • Currency: We recommend bringing Euros. They are widely accepted in shops, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Escudos (CVE): This is the local currency. You can withdraw Escudos at ATMs located in major hotels and in the Santa Maria town center.
  • Gratuities: While tips are not mandatory, they are very much appreciated and directly support the local community.

3. Health & Well-being

  • Water: Always drink bottled water. Avoid ice in drinks outside of major hotels and never drink tap water. Aim for at least 2L of water a day due to the dry climate.
  • Sun Protection: The sun is extremely strong, even on cloudy days. Use high-factor sunscreen, wear a hat, and use sunglasses.
  • Insects: Bring repellent and plug-in devices for your room. Keep doors and windows closed at night to keep mosquitoes away.
  • Hygiene: Use hand sanitizer and avoid food exposed to flies or excessive heat.

4. Essential Packing Checklist

  • Clothing:
  •      Light cotton clothes for the daytime.
  •      A light jacket or scarf for the evenings, especially from December to February when it can get windy.
  •       Dinner in Hotels: Gentlemen, please note that most hotel restaurants require long pants for dinner (jeans are usually allowed).
  • Footwear:
  •     Flip-flops for the beach.
  •     Comfortable walking shoes for tours (the terrain can be rocky and uneven).
  •     Water shoes: Essential for the Lemon Shark experience and rocky coastline areas.
  • Travel Pharmacy: Bring your regular medications (hypertension, diabetes, etc.). Include basics like paracetamol, band-aids, rehydration salts, and anti-histamines.
  • Gear: Snorkeling mask, power bank, European-style 2-pin round plug adapter, and a reusable water bottle to help us reduce plastic waste.

5. Logistics & Luggage

  • Luggage Sharing: If traveling as a couple, split your clothes between two suitcases. If one goes missing, you both still have clothes for the first few days.
  • Carry-on Essentials: Always keep your medications, swimwear, and a change of clothes in your hand luggage.
  • Laundry: Hotel laundry services can be expensive; there are affordable self-service laundries in Santa Maria.

6. The Lifestyle: “#NoStress”

In Cape Verde, our motto is #NoStress. The pace of life is slower than in Europe or America. Relax, be patient, and embrace our local hospitality (Morabeza).
