Ilha do Sal
Sal is the most touristic island in Cape Verde. Off the coast of West Africa, a destination of sun and paradisiacal beaches. To the east, Pedra de Lume is the place where an old salt mine is located in the caldera of an extinct volcano, the only saline inside a volcanic caldera known in the world, recognized for its salt water considered therapeutic. To the north of the capital, Espargos, the mirage of Terra Boa appears as a lake in the desert landscape. The island’s white sand beaches include the long, crescent-shaped harbor in Santa Maria, a bustling town on the southern coast.
Common turtles are known to breed near the shores of the island. The strong waves make Sal island also popular for water sports. On south, the beaches of Ponta Preta and Kite Beach are known for kitesurfing. On the west coast of the island, Buracona also known as “Olho Azul” (Blue eye) is a cave in which the reflection of the sun gives shape to a blue eye in its turquoise waters. There is also a natural swimming pool surrounded by volcanic rocks. Nearby, there is the port of Palmeira and its bay, full of colorful fishing boats. Dolphins and sharks inhabit the surrounding Atlantic waters.
