Weather on Sal Island: The Ultimate Guide to Planning Your Trip
Sal Island is a premier destination with a dry tropical climate, boasting over 350 days of sunshine per year. Known as the “Island of Eternal Sun,” the weather here is rarely an obstacle, but slight seasonal variations can influence the type of experience you are looking for.
1. Seasonal Overview
Unlike Europe or North America, Sal doesn’t have four distinct seasons. We divide the year into two main periods:
- The Windy Season (November to May): This is the cooler period, with average temperatures between 21°C and 25°C (70°F – 77°F). The trade winds blow stronger, making it the golden era for water sports lovers.
- The Warm Season (June to October): Temperatures rise, ranging between 26°C and 30°C (79°F – 86°F). The wind subsides, the sea becomes calmer and crystal clear, and humidity increases slightly.
2. Monthly Climate Expectations
| Period | Air Temp | Sea Temp | Travel Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan – Mar | 21°C – 23°C | 22°C – 23°C | Peak season for Kitesurfing & Windsurfing. Cool evenings. |
| Apr – Jun | 23°C – 26°C | 23°C – 24°C | Perfect balance: less wind and longer days. |
| Jul – Oct | 27°C – 30°C | 26°C – 27°C | Warm water, ideal for diving and turtle nesting season. |
| Nov – Dec | 24°C – 26°C | 24°C – 25°C | Fresh breezes return and excellent marine visibility. |
3. Unique Natural Phenomena
- Bruma Seca (Dry Haze): Between December and February, “Bruma Seca” may occur—a fine dust cloud traveling from the Sahara Desert. It creates a misty, mystical atmosphere and reduces visibility, but usually lasts only a few days.
- Rainfall: Precipitation on Sal is extremely low (around 90mm annually). If it rains at all, it usually happens in September or October in short bursts that rarely affect holiday plans.
4. Expert Tips: When is the best time for…?
- Sunbathing & Beach Days: June to November. The wind is almost non-existent, and the sea temperature is perfect.
- Kitesurfing & Windsurfing: December to April. This is when the Northeast trade winds are at their peak.
- Turtle Watching: July to October. Nesting peaks during these warm months—a must-see eco-experience!
- Whale Watching: March and April. This is when humpback whales often pass by our coast.
Packing Essentials
Regardless of when you visit, don’t forget:
- High Factor Sunscreen: The sun in Sal is very strong, even with a cool breeze.
- Light Jacket/Wrap: For evenings between December and March, a light layer is essential.
- Comfortable Footwear: Essential for walking on the volcanic terrain during our island tours.
Sal Experiences Tip:
Don’t be fooled by occasional morning clouds; the sun in Sal burns right through them! If your goal is diving or snorkeling in our natural pools, we highly recommend September and October for the warmest water temperatures.
